Fall cleaning checklist: 6 spots Oakville homes forget

Before the windows close for winter, these are the six spots that collect a summer's worth of dust and get missed in a regular clean.

Why fall is the clean that matters most

Once the windows shut in October, whatever is in your house stays in it until April. The dust, the pollen off the QEW, the pet hair behind the fridge. A fall reset is the one deep clean that pays off for five months.

1. Window tracks and screens

  • Vacuum the tracks with a brush attachment, then wipe with a damp microfibre.
  • Screens come out and get a gentle hose rinse before they're stored.
  • Wipe the frame and sill while the screen is off.

2. Ceiling fans

  • Slip an old pillowcase over each blade and pull it back so the dust lands in the case, not on the bed.
  • Flip the fan direction to clockwise for winter so warm air gets pushed down.

3. Behind and under the fridge

  • Pull it out and vacuum the coils. Clogged coils make the fridge work harder all winter.
  • Mop the floor you haven't seen since spring.

4. The front entry

  • Wash the mat, wipe the baseboards and door frame.
  • Clear a landing spot for boots, coats and backpacks so the mess has a home.

5. Furnace vents and returns

  • Pop the covers off and soak them in warm soapy water.
  • Vacuum the first foot of each duct.

6. Light fixtures

  • Cool the bulbs, then wipe globes with a barely damp cloth.
  • A dusty globe cuts light noticeably once the days get short.

Pro tip: Do the fans and fixtures first, floors last. Dust falls.

What you'll need

  • A vacuum with a brush attachment and a crevice tool.
  • Four or five microfibre cloths, so a dusty one never goes back on a clean surface.
  • A bucket of warm water with a little dish soap, and an old pillowcase for the fans.
  • A step stool that puts fixtures at eye level. Reaching overhead is how globes get dropped.

How long to set aside

For a three-bedroom home, plan on about three hours if you work alone. Window tracks and vents take the longest because there are so many of them. The fridge is twenty minutes, most of it spent moving it. Split the list over two evenings if a full afternoon is hard to find, and do the upstairs first so dust is not carried back down.

Two checks while the stool is out

  • Press the test button on each smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, and wipe the dust off the cover.
  • Look at the furnace filter. If it is grey, replace it before the heating starts running every day.

What can wait until spring

Outside window glass, the garage floor and the patio furniture can all wait. Cold water and short days make those jobs miserable, and none of them affect the air inside. Fall is about the surfaces you will be shut in with.
